PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Matt is Specialized Faculty and the program director for STEM Entrepreneurship at the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship (JMC).  He also teaches sustainable value chains in the MSE of Social and Sustainable Enterprises program.  His teaching and research focus on developing workforce skills in sustainability leadership through the lens of food and agricultural entrepreneurship.

Matt brings a depth of leadership experience to the STEM Entrepreneurship role at JMC. Before joining the faculty at FSU, he was a top 50 senior manager at a large multinational food and agricultural company, where he led a global product line (6 business units / 102 employees in 11 countries) that monetized financial opportunities from emerging market agricultural trade. His start-up businesses include corporate venture capital and carbon credits trading. He served on the leadership team of Agribusiness, the company’s largest division, and was the global commercial lead on talent management initiatives.

Matt’s introduction to entrepreneurship was straight out of graduate school when he co-founded a hedge fund in the new market of weather derivatives. He set up trading infrastructure, valuation models, and the proprietary weather database. Matt worked with the leadership team to arrange financing for the company and participated in capital raise meetings. He coordinated due diligence with the creditor banks and presented methodology to rating agencies to attain credit standing for trading portfolios.  He also typed envelopes and bought office supplies, learning quickly that no successful business gets built with rolled-down sleeves.

Matt earned his Master of Science and Doctoral degrees from Florida State in Meteorology.
